In this opening chapter, Xenia Zeiler provides an introduction to and overview of the study of media and religion in Asia, mediatization and mediatized religion and the book’s structure and chapters. In order to broaden our understanding of what constitutes mediatized religion overall, this edited volume looks beyond the so far dominant European and North American regional contexts and discusses different aspects of mediatized religion in Asia, by including chapters on various religious traditions in Asian regions ranging from the very East, namely Japan, to the very West of geographical Asia, namely Israel. The case studies critically discuss their data in the light of the mediatization theories and approaches and highlight their benefits and limits for studying religion in Asia. As such, the chapters also exemplify the intensity and variety of religious constructions related to media overall, and digital media specifically, in Asia today. By opening up this new field of geographical, cultural and religious contexts, the volume asks critically if mediatization approaches are useful in non-“Western” contexts, or if mediatization has to be verified further.
