There are toponymical Livonianisms in Livland (Vidzeme) as well as in Courland (Kurzeme). The article gives possible etymologizations of such potamonyms as Aģe, Aģes strauts, Jugla, Jogla, Korģupīte, Lepurgas grāvis, Līlastupe, Lorupe, Sude, Sudaliņš, Pižaga etc., such lymnonyms as Aģes ezers, Juglas ezers, Sudaļu ezers, Līlastes ezers, Juveris, Ninieris, Pinieris. Several potamonyms and limnonyms of possible Livonian origin in Courland are analysed in this article as well: Aga, Agas valks, Emeru valks, Pinkelvalks, Lainums, Kaņieris. Some of the hydronyms are recorded (70 or even more than 100 years before) in unadopted Livonian form.
Usually the primary semantics of the hydronym and the parallels with the Finno-Ugric place-names allow to recognize the possible loan-names from Livonian or Estonian. The morphological formants which supposed to testify the toponyms of hypothetical Finno-Ugric origin are: -eris, -ere, -ēris or -ieris (< Liv. jõra / järu or Est.. järv ‘lake’) in such already mentioned limnonyms as Ninieris, Juveris, Sàsēris, Siveris. It is possible that the Livonian etymon should be also searched for the names with the component -ulda, for instance, in the lake-name Ikuldas ezers in Lielstraupe which has several possible hypotheses of the origin (cf. the village name Ykewalde recorded in the 13th cent.), also in such Latvian toponyms as Sigulda, Sumulda. The hydronyms with the last component -uži and -aži often has been considered the borrowings from Finno-Ugric languages, for instance: Pabažezers // Pabažu ezers (“Pabbasche see” in 1638) – secondary derivative from the inhabited place-name Latv. Pabaži (Liv. Pabasile) which could be of Lionian origin (Lvv III 2).
Many possible Finno-Ugrisms analyzed in this article are more or less unclear, however, some hypotheses relate them also with Finno-Ugric languages (lake-name Rustēgs in Kūdums, Uikas ezeri – names of two lakes in Ādaži, lake name Uķis in Aduliena etc.).
