At the IUPS World Congress of Physiological Sciences (http://iups2017.com/site/) held August 1-5, 2017, delegates from around the world discussed a landmark report on Physiology: Current Trends and Future Challenges (http://www.iups.org/news/iups-news/39/) and received praise from an enthusiastic and engaging audience who challenged physiologists across the globe to communicate with a broad group of scientists, to build multidisciplinary and multiregional collaborations, and to bring integrative physiology to the forefront in research and education. The Report has been published in collaboration with The Physiological Society; an Executive Summary of the report and its companion essays available:http://www.iups.org/media/other_reports/Executive_Summary_of_BGA_Report_and_Companion_Essays.pdf.
It is important now that funding agencies, public and private, should carefully consider what needs to be done to complement genomic studies with precise, quantitative physiological analysis of the regulatory processes that control the expression and interpretation of gene sequences to determine health and disease.
The world of physiological sciences is ready to meet the challenge.
