Enhancing early emotional attachment with Prenatal Theraplay
Transition to parenthood is a life-changing process. Future parents go trough identity changes where they turn more inwards, into caregiving and nurture, and taking care of the their close family relationships. The couple romantic relationship broadens to cover the co-parenting of the joint baby. Self- and other representational changes include also revisiting own attachment history, as pregnancy activates memory systems from own caretaking history and future parents need to evaluate what good they want to bring into the new relationship with their baby (and what to avoid). Adjusting to pregnancy as a physiological state, with bodily and hormonal changes including cognitive changes in attention and memory functions, both facilitates the psychological process of pregnancy but also can cause at least occasional stress. All in all, pregnancy is enormously emotional period for the new parents, with up’s and downs in mood, and related cognitive and biological changes. The main goal is to help in developing a new, emotional relationship with the fetus baby and prepare for caretaking of the newcomer.
