Refining the Paleo- to Mesoproterozoic apparent polar wander path of Baltica: implications to a Mesoproterozoic supercontinent

Abstrakti

Recently due to increase in high quality paleomagnetic data and new geochronology results reconstructions of Paleo - to Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna (Columbia, Hudsonland) have improved. Baltica and Laurentia are thought to represent two of the most important building blocks of this supercontinent in a single NENA (North Europe- North America) juxtaposition between ca. 1.75- 1.27 Ga forming the core of Nuna with Siberia and
proto-Australia. However Paleo- to Mesoproterozoic paleomagnetic data is still missing or allows controversial reconstructions for other big continental blocks such as Amazonia, Congo/São Francisco, North China, India, West Africa, and Antarctica with in Nuna.

Many recent paleomagnetic campaigns have refined the apparent polar wander path of Baltica and new high quality Mesoproterozoic paleomagnetic poles with new geochronology results for Baltica supporting NENA connection have been published. Those include Subjotnian pole from Åland (1575.9 ± 3.0 Ma; U-Pb) and coeval pole from Satakunta diabase dykes in Finland; pole for Småland intrusives (1780 ± 3 Ma; U-Pb) in Sweden; and pole for Lake Ladoga basalts and intrusives (1452 ± 12, 1459±3, 1457±2 Ma; U-Pb) in Russia. Moreover paleomagnetism of the Mesoproterozoic sandstones from Satakunta region (Finland) show Subjotnian magnetization direction and support the NENA connection.

To further test the NENA connection between Baltica and Laurentia and to study the lifecycle of Nuna supercontinent preliminary paleomagnetic poles from ca. 1.87 Ga Keuruu diabase dykes (Finland) and ca. 1.20 Ga Lentiira lamproite dykes (Finland) are discussed.
