A new postgraduate hospital and healthcare centre pharmacy specialisation programme was launched at the University of Helsinki in 2010. The purpose of this unique programme is to support competency development of hospital pharmacists so that they are able to independently continue to develop professionally and to become experts in their field of practice. Indeed, the aim is that the pharmacists will be able to establish and improve clinical pharmacy services as part of the interprofessional healthcare team, contributing to, and taking the responsibility for, establishing and evaluating safe pharmaceutical treatment of patients. An important part of this task is using, contributing
to, doing, and disseminating research to benefit the development of pharmaceutical services.
The programme was developed in collaboration with stakeholders in the healthcare sector through an e-survey, open seminars and field visits to university and district hospitals, and with pharmacy education experts in all three schools of pharmacy in Finland. It was observed that while there is great interest in, and need for, clinical pharmacy services research in hospital and healthcare centre pharmacies, few research projects have been or were being conducted. Therefore, learning about research in clinical and social pharmacy and pharmacoeconomics, and appropriate research methods, has become an integral part of the specialisation programme and is applied to research questions emerging from practice. The pharmacists will be putting their theoretical knowledge into practice by doing research.
The aim of this review is to describe the significance of learning about using, contributing to, doing, and disseminating research within the hospital and healthcare centre pharmacy specialisation programme and the wider Finnish hospital and healthcare centre pharmacy practice. The review also describes the current hospital and healthcare centre pharmacy research topics that have emerged from the different stakeholders and the participants, and discusses the importance of developing the pharmaceutical services within Finnish healthcare.
