This essay examines the methods of reading historical oral poetry via digital interface Octavo. Octavo is a flexible tool for both quantitative and qualitative analyses of varying textual data with structured metadata. The corpus in use is the SKVR-corpus of Finnic oral poetry (www.skvr.fi) with 89 247 texts in four closely related languages and lots of linguistic, orthographical and poetic variation. Here, it is essential both to have enough contextual knowledge on the corpus itself—how was is created and curated, what kinds of traditions does it represent—and to give the user smooth possibilities to move between quantitative results, metadata and the details of individual texts. The article presents some case studies, evaluating the possibilities and methods of gathering relevant sub-corpora for different purposes with Octavo.
