The purely functionalistic and technological reasoning in the maritime investigations as well as the lack of the theoretical awareness grounded in the empirical material has resulted in the watercraft landing site category being a banality in archaeological studies. It stands as just an illustration without significance of its own. This article argues that watercraft landing sites have an archaeological source-value for the interpretations on the past societies. As a social category, landing site is defined as a water-bound contact zone where movements and meetings on land and by watercraft are taking place and are facilitated by the very locality. Based on this definition, a model is presented as a tool for explaining the available archaeological data as well as a framework to apply in the studies of landing sites. This discussion is empirically exemplified with the case of the landing site of a medieval town of Borgund in the inner Atlantic archipelago of Western-Norway.
