The 2024 TALS Academy for research training and method in law is a week-long virtual workshop designed to provide a short period of intensive training to a small group of scholars in the legal academic activities of research writing, careful reading, and effective academic communication. The focus is on method, practical training and the cultivation of an ethos. The faculty is drawn from the Transnational Association of Legal Scholars (TALS), a group of legal scholars established in 2023, experienced in research, and supervision, and interested in the conduct and method of research in law. Over the five days we are together, the Academy will comprise five components:a) Plenary Sessions: lectures and talks by TALS Faculty, including the Opening and Closing sessions as well as the Reflection Exercise.
b) Writing Workshops: in them, participants will give and receive feedback on each other’s work, and receive individual feedback from TALS Faculty, and general feedback from a select group of participants.
c) Skills Circles: TALS Faculty will convene skills circles on academic craft.
d) Surgeries:staged conversations about how we might navigate the difficulties and problems we might encounter in our academic careers.
e) Design Labs: conversational engagement with faculty member authors of selected published texts. They seek to excavate the different design decisions, tactical choices and strategic manoeuvres that went into the successful construction/publication of that text.
