CGIAR and the African rural prosperity: the pathways I am very glad to know about feature entitled "African Higher Education Resource Database" and hopefully it will be a comprehensive data base to encompass agriculture. I am very pleased that has taken an important step forward in the right direction ((thanks to Prof. Markku for providing the link). Last week I participated in a conference in Addis (12-16.4.2016) entitled “Agricultural research for rural prosperity: rethinking the pathways” organized jointly by CGIAR, ISPC. Many organizations are present (ICIPIE, ILRI, CIMMYT, IITA, CATIE, IFPRI, UNEP, UNECA, FAO, USAID, CIAT, IWMI, CIP, CIRAD, ANAFE, ACIAR, & VITRI, but unfortunately no representation for CIFOR or ICRAF !! I spoke and commented on the need for African Capacity building which to be based on partnerships and well written programmes (with clear impacts ex-ante). The role of CGIAR institutes is to support and developing the capacity of NARS. But, for the Agricultural Research to contribute to rural prosperity in Africa, firstly, Africans should know what resources are existing (infrastructure and human resources). Then, I touched on the need to create a data base and establish a think tank for agriculturist (name, place, title, etc) in order also to benefit from the agricultural experts in the diaspora. I pet the presents if they know or guess the number of agriculturist (hold Bsc in agriculture) in Africa, and how many agricultural HEIs working on agricultural education or research or related fields. I also emphasized that the main and the most important pathway to rural prosperity is agroforestry.
