The rise of power politics and intensifying strategic competition between great powers have had an impact on the security environment in Northern Europe, the European Arctic included. Russia’s focus in the Arctic is increasingly on hard security issues and Moscow continues to develop its military capabilities in the region. This has started to prompt responses from Western actors. NATO’s attention to the region is slowly growing, as illustrated by the refocus on the North Atlantic maritime region and the GIUK gap in particular. Nordic states – many of which are also NATO members – have also taken new defensive steps: they have re-aligned their threat perceptions, intensified defence collaboration and invested in new capabilities and exercises. Following Russia’s illegal actions in Ukraine, seven other Arctic countries have imposed sanctions on Russia. The roundtable will discuss the current geostrategic situation in the Arctic. What are the most important hard security dynamics in the polar region? What role does the Arctic play in the Northern European geostrategic constellation?
