Beskrivning

This lecture course introduces the history of feminism through a number of classical texts and their authors. The course covers the textual tradition of feminist thought starting from 1790s up to the 1970s, dividing this history into different periods of time and distinct contexts. The main focus is on a number of famous books and writers, starting from the French Revolution era’s Olympe de Gouges and Mary Wollstonecraft, and continuing, through Simone de Beauvoir and Virginia Woolf, to 1970’s radical feminists such as Shulamith Firestone, and Kate Millett.
The purpose of the course is to provide students with a strong command of the historical contexts of feminist thought as well as the sense of different issues that have been central in feminism at different periods of time. Simultaneously, the course introduces a number of surprising personalities and colorful lives of feminist thinkers.
The course consists of lectures and small group meetings, in which the books presented during the lectures are discussed with assistant teachers.
