A NOVA-funded course “An Introduction to Ecosystem Service Theory and Practices” took place from the 31st October to the 4th of November 2016, hosted by the Latvia University of Agriculture in Jelgava. The course was organized in cooperation between the University of Copenhagen, University of Helsinki and Latvia University of Agriculture.Organizers and lecturers included Prof. Jette Jacobsen, Dalia D’Amato (PhD), Brent Matthies (PhD) and Arttu Malkamäki (PhD student).
The course consisted of a comprehensive overview of ecosystem services concept in terms of theoretical background and applications. Contents encompassed key topics such as classification, indicators, valuation, governance, service science, ethical considerations.
The course also benefited from a contextually-grounded example, the Latvian LIFE project "Assessment of ecosystems and their services for nature biodiversity conservation and management", presented by Rita Aräja, Inga Hoņavko (Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia), Aija Peršēvica and Elīna Konstantinova (Association Baltic Coasts).
