Lectures (x3) and a seminar for Master students on "Energy and Russia"

Energy and Russia. Lecturer: Professor Veli-Pekka Tynkkynen, University of Helsinki This topic approaches Russian energy from three different perspectives: foreign policy and diplomacy; the environment and climate change; and culture and identity. The lectures will draw a comprehensive picture how energy abundance and dependence impacts Russian politics, society and the environment. The lectures approach Russia and energy via discussions in political geography, environmental studies / politics, and cultural studies. The lectures will focus on the following questions: What kind of role does energy play in Russian foreign policy? Does Russia use energy as a foreign policy tool – is Russia an Energy Superpower? What environmental problems does the Russian energy sector produce, and how does Russia perform in climate politics and policies? Finally, what kind of role does energy abundance and dependence play in defining Russian culture and identity?
