Beskrivning
“Archival Dialogues: A Record of Feelings”To count, order, arrange, catalogue is to bear witness, but it also absolves us from recognising individual histories.
This panel presentation includes a performative reading and accompanying audio-visual materials based on my video installation On the Tenderness of Men (April 2024) first shown at the Museum of Finnish Architecture, who is also the custodian of the archival materials the installation draws on. The video positions the archive “not as passive storage but as a means to rewrite stories” (Karvinen, 2023). I am its ‘guest’, an informant of untold histories. To “resist the silencing effects of the serial bureaucratic grammar of the archive” (Campt, 2017: 90), I imagine how the archival boxes I am rummaging through would be organized if they were arranged not according to dates and a chronology of events but a chronology of feelings.
Anger
Regret
Exhilaration
Putting the record straight
Childhood memories
Admiration
I take note of the archivist’s notes, tracing the lineage of their thought. The ancestry of the stories contained within the storage boxes is revealed through a multi-modal sensory engagement given room for both imagination and the ‘hard’ sciences.
