Infectious disease: the importance of population evolution

Infectious diseases: the importance of population evolution Alexandre Budria, University of Helsinki Major medical progresses rely on the management of environmental factors influencing disease exposure and patient caring. Aseptic surgery and the discovery of antibiotics in the early 20th Century, for example, led to a massive reduction of infections from the major plagues of the industrialized world. However, the ongoing resurgence of several infectious disease, especially shifts of distribution range or increased drug resistance, show the need for understanding host-pathogen interactions in a more general framework. Here I present how evolutionary studies perceive the dynamics of host-parasite interactions and how these findings can be applied in the management of epidemics.
