The Steppe Data Impact on Prehistoric Europe: Paving the way for future research

Beskrivning

When analysing mortuary records, which constitute the overwhelming majority of traces left behind by Bronze Age steppe communities, archaeologists encounter a wide range of difficulties. There are varying documentation standards and styles accross countries, sometimes confusing descriptions and uneven terminology, while typologies are inconsistent because of differences in perception. Apart from the information provided by archaeological approaches, we currently have access to an exponentially growing amount of data available from interdisciplinary research on human remains and material culture, including radiocarbon dating, bioanthropology, genetics, stable isotopes, as well as palaeoclimate and palaeosoils reconstructions from environmental sciences. These aspects significantly influence any attempt to analyse and interpret the archaeological record. This lecture aims to highlight the primary research challenges in the collection and interpretation of large interdisciplinary datasets, and to initiate a discussion on optimising big-data-mining with the assistance of AI.
