Beskrivning

A comprehensive understanding of solar magnetic flux ropes is an essential part of space weather forecasting. What causes these structures to form and erupt from the Sun remains uncertain. Here we generate 2D maps of the photospheric electric field by applying the Electric Field Inversion Toolkit (ELECTRICIT) to HMI vector magnetograms. We then use the electric field maps to drive a fully data-driven time-dependent magnetofrictional model to study the evolution of the magnetic field on an active region scale. The ensuing analysis is aided by metrics such as the non-potential helicity budget of the domain and maps of the squashing factor to better understand the magnetic topology and the eruption dynamics.
