University of Helsinki Music Research Laboratory

The University of Helsinki Music Research Laboratory (UHMRL) is a multidisciplinary research and teaching infrastructure dedicated to the study of sound, voice, music, technology, and their cultural significance. Founded in the academic year 1961-62 as the University of Helsinki's Sound Technical Laboratory, UHMRL has evolved from a pioneering centre of electronic music and digital sound synthesis into a unique environment supporting humanities-based, artistic, and technology-oriented research and teaching.

Today, UHMRL provides facilities, expertise, collections, and research support for a wide range of sound-, voice-, and music-related research and teaching activities. Its research expertise includes sound and music signal measurement and visualization, sound quality assessment, listening research, computational sound and music analysis, Sound Studies, music technology historiography, Studio Studies, electroacoustic music research, electronic musical instrument research, archaeoacoustics, and audio heritage digitization and preservation.

The laboratory combines historical and cultural heritage research with computational methods, acoustic measurements, sound analysis, experimental music research, and artistic practice. In addition to supporting research through its facilities and collections, UHMRL investigates the methodologies and processes of digitization, preservation, replication, documentation, and analysis related to historical audio and audiovisual materials.

UHMRL maintains nationally and internationally significant collections of historical electronic musical instruments and archival materials related to Finnish music, art, and music technology history. These collections are not treated solely as heritage objects, but as active resources for research, teaching, artistic projects, technological replication, and experimental development.

Owing to its long history and unique collections, UHMRL is not only a research infrastructure but also an important research object in its own right, providing perspectives on the histories of music technology, electronic music, recording practices, studio culture, and experimental artistic communities.

The laboratory's facilities include three interconnected recording rooms with adjustable acoustics, two control rooms equipped for stereo and multichannel monitoring, and equipment for sound recording, measurement, analysis, and listening experiments. While firmly embedded within the University of Helsinki, UHMRL has retained its long-standing culture of experimentation, hands-on technological development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

UHMRL actively participates in national and international research, heritage, and artistic networks related to sound, music technology, electronic music, cultural heritage, and experimental instrument design. The laboratory functions as a platform where research, artistic practice, education, technological development, and cultural heritage preservation meet.

UHMRL operates as part of Musicology within the Department of Philosophy, History and Art Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Helsinki.
