Peat is the principal component of growing media in European horticulture. Sustainable alternatives for peat are needed, as peat extraction and use has many negative effects on the environment. We are studying living Sphagnum moss as a substitute for peat in horticultural applications such as plant propagation, pot plant and nursery stock production. The main aspects studied include the physical properties of Sphagnum moss, allelopathic effects of Sphagnum species and the growth of greenhouse crops in Sphagnum containing substrates.
