Current PhD project: “Language processing in the dyslexic brain – neural markers of dyslexia in human development”

Abstract: Developmental dyslexia is a highly heritable disorder in which reading skills are compromised despite normal intelligence and education. Reading problems in dyslexia are thought to primarily originate from weak speech sound representations in the brain or poor phonological skills. This doctoral project investigates the neuroplasticity of language in the developing and mature brain, with focus on the heritable learning disorder dyslexia. The thesis will address the presence of problems in linguistic processing in infants at familial risk for dyslexia and dyslexic adults using different brain imaging modalities and behavioral tests. In the two studies of the thesis with newborn infants, neural speech sound discrimination, representations and rapid learning of novel words will be compared between individuals with familial risk for dyslexia and healthy controls. In the two adult studies of the thesis, a recent influential hypotheses on the types of phonological impairments underlying dyslexia and dyslexia subtypes will be tested. In addition, a new approach to characterize the neural responses during comprehension of complex real-life speech will be used. It opens up possibilities of comparing the brain activity of dyslexic and non-dyslexic participants during a natural every-day task, which has only scarcely been investigated. The reading, phonological and memory abilities will be determined with a neuropsychological test battery. This project will illuminate the nature of neurocognitive dysfunctions in dyslexia, shed light on how dyslexia manifests in the developing and mature brain and it may detect neural dyslexia markers. The results have an important application value to, for example, the development of intervention programs for ameliorating or preventing dyslexic symptoms, as well as early identification of dyslexia.
