Current research:

As a Postdoctoral Researcher in the REBOUND project (Reconceptualizing Boundaries Together Towards Resilient and Just Arctic Futures), Osso scrutinizes whose needs, perspectives, and rights are heard in the Finnish Arctic’s ‘green’ transition, aiming to uncover the potential inadequacies and insufficiencies within current governance structures to ensure an inclusive and equitable transition for all stakeholders, including refugees and migrants. This research will utilize multiperspectival socio-legal methodology, juxtaposing top-down regulatory frameworks with bottom-up perspectives of the affected individuals. Within this project, I will employ empirical socio-legal research methods, including semi-structured interviews with refugees and migrants employed in the targeted sectors, to gather qualitative data on their lived experiences and socio-economic integration in the context of the 'green' transition.

Doctoral research:

Berfin's doctoral research project investigated the interplay between the externalization and internalization of migration management and the political agency of refugees in irregular circumstances (including asylum seekers) in border zones. This empirical socio-legal project employed a transdisciplinary approach through combining law and social sciences with visual art. Within this project, Osso conducted three empirical case studies on the European Union's Greek-Turkish external border, focusing on the implications of migration management for refugee 'access'. The study employed a range of qualitative methods, mainly analysis of legal texts and policy documents, visual analysis of refugee-produced paintings, and multimodal analysis of refugee-produced social media content. The goal was to develop a grounded analytical framework with perspectives from critical border and migration studies and contemporary political theorists.
