Research

Most recently my industry-related research has focused on the development of geophysical hard rock mineral exploration and mine planning methods. For example, our COGITO-MIN project 2016-2018 (funded through the ERA-MIN network), in collaboration with research institutions and industry partners from Finland and Poland, aimed to develop cost-effective, novel active and passive seismic exploration methods. The University of Helsinki was also a partner in the large H2020 Smart Exploration project 2018-2020 (https://smartexploration.eu/); in particular, through being the task leader of passive-active 3D seismic survey at the Siiilinjärvi phosphate mine site. Most recently, my main focus has been on coordination of the buildup of the FLEX-EPOS seismic instrument pool - a join venture of several Finnish research institutions.

My other current research interests include for example utilization of geophysical methods (e.g. ground penetrating radar) in hydrogeological and environmental studies. However, my PhD research focused on quantification of plate motion, and the uncertainties of such motion, relative to the hotspots, i.e., while my current focus is on applied geophysics, my background is in global geophysics.

I teach a variety of university courses in geophysics (for example MSc courses Applied Geophysics, Field Course of Solid Earth Geophysics, Seismic Structural Studies, Ground Penetrating Radar).

I am interested in working at the intersection of science and policy, and have past experience for example on foresight analysis for strategic planning as part of the ICSU (International Council for Science) Foresight process, which I had the opportunity to participate in 2010.
