Professor on mathematics education at the University of Duisburg (Germany) 1994, 1999

Full professor on mathematics and science education for the academic years 1999-2003 at the University of Turku

Appointment as a full professor on mathematics and informatics education at the University of Helsinki in 2004

 

Activities on Mathematics Education

Current Research Interests:

 The improvement of mathematics teaching in middle schools

•   The use of open-ended problems in classroom

•   International comparison of teachers’ and pupils’ beliefs about mathematics teaching, teacher change

•   PISA results in mathematics

On-going research

Several on-going research projects in mathematics education since 1989, mostly financed by the Academy of Finland

The most recent one is the research enterprise “Understanding in Mathematics” that started 2000 with the small scale project "Development of Mathematical Thinking in School Mathematics", financed by the University of Turku Foundation (7200 euros), followed by “Understanding and Self-Confidence in School Mathematics”, financed 2001-03 (altogether 200’000 euros) by the Academy of Finland, followed by “Elementary Teacher Students’ Mathematics”, financed 2003-06 (altogether 236’000 euros) by the Academy of Finland, and ended with "Development of pupils' understanding of mathematics with the use of open ended problems", financed 2010–13 (altogether 400'000 euros) by the Academy of Finland.

Next I will plan and apply a research grant from the Academy of Finland for a research project “Beyond PISA results in mathematics “.

Scientific working abroad: Several longer visits on abroad with different research grants: Dortmund (Germany) 1984, Friburg (Germany) 1987, Athens, Ga/ USA) 1991.

International conferences (organizer, speaker, etc.):

Organizer of eight conferences in Finland (Helsinki, Lahti, Ivalo) and in Germany (Duisburg) since 1989.

Plenary speaker in eight conferences (Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Norway) since 1987.

Initiator and leader of several scientific activities (discussion groups, seminars, working groups, workshops).

Organizising member of several scientific bodies (ICME-7, EU-PME, ICME-8, PME, NORMA-98, ICME-9, ICME-10) since 1992.

Reviewer in several international scientific journals:

Reviewing regularly several international journals on mathematics education

Dissertations etc:

Supervisor and/or official opponent of fourteen dissertations in Finland since 1990.

Supervisor and/or official opponent of four dissertations abroad since 1994.

Guest editor for Analyses of the International Reviews on Mathematical Education (= ZDM) in 1991, 1995, 1996, and 1997.

Teaching at university

Lectures on the first and second year mathematics (pure mathematics)

Plenty of papers in international and national teacher periodicals, and many books for teachers, since 1978; still actively producing papers

Organizer, leader and chief teacher for a variety of teacher in-service courses in Finland with various length (from one to five days), since 1985.

Invited to be the organizer and chief teacher for some teacher in-service courses abroad: in Germany 1994, in Estonia 1995, 1998.
