I was appointed as Lecturer in Animal Population Biology from 1st October 2001.
I was promoted to Associate Professor (= Senior Lecturer) from 1st August 2005.
I was promoted to Reader from 1st August 2011.
I was appointed to my additional post as Warden of Bonington Hall from 1st January 2004 and reappointed, following University restructuring, to the role of Warden of the Bonington Hall Cluster, from 13th August 2011. The role ceases on 1st January 2021.
I moved from Nottingham to Helsinki in April 2021.

Languages
First language: English.
Other languages:
Dutch (fluent, my working language for 5+ years in Leiden)
French (reasonable but rusty)
Spanish (intermediate)
Danish (intermediate, gradually declining due to lack of use)
Polish (lower intermediate: can make myself understood in everyday situations)
Finnish (just starting...)
My research is a mixture of fundamental evolutionary biology, population and community ecology and behavioural ecology and the applications of research in these areas, principally to problems in agricultural pest management. I also have interests in biostatistics and some other areas, such as conservation ecology and entomophagy. There is no hard-and-fast distinction between fundamental (also termed ‘pure’ or ‘basic’) research and applied research and I find it useful to pursue elements of both in my work.
Most of my work involves parasitoid wasps, often linking to their performance as agents of biological pest control. I have worked on other types of insects (e.g. bees, crickets) plus some other animal taxa (e.g. birds, mammals).
There are two University of Helsinki doctoral programmes that are relevant to my research area.
Doctoral programme in sustainable use of renewable natural resources (AGFOREE)
Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources | University of Helsinki
Sustainable use of resources is imperative for the future of humankind, nature and planet Earth. The doctoral programme focuses on plant production, forests, domestic animals, technology, the environment and economy. Many of the research fields included in AGFOREE integrate basic and applied research. Natural processes in phenomena spanning scales from the molecular to the global are explored together with their socio-economic aspects and related environmental policy context.
Doctoral programme in wildlife biology (LUOVA)
Doctoral Programme in Wildlife Biology | University of Helsinki
The Doctoral Programme in Wildlife Biology (Finnish acronym) trains doctoral researchers in the fields of ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation, and management of natural populations and communities, as well as in taxonomy and systematics, and in computational biology. LUOVA's Wildlife Biology research covers both basic and applied research in the disciplines: ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation, management of natural populations and communities, taxonomy and systematics and computational biology.
