Professor Talonen has awarded Dr of Theology at the University of Helsinki in 1989 and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oulu in 1997. He has been Professor of Church history at the University of Helsinki since 2005.

 

Scientific interests of Prof. Talonen can be divided especially into three sectors: the relationship between Church and Politics, the history of European revival movements (especially Laestadianism) and the Church history of the Baltic states, especially Latvian  church history.  At the movement he has Research grant for Senior Scientist from the Academy of Finland,  from 1 Aug 2010 untill 31 July 2011. Professor Talonen writes a general overview on Latvian Evangelical Lutheran theology in 1920-1944.  

 

Professor Talonen has been Visiting Scholar at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 1999 (three months). He has done short trips for studies and research in different countries from 1974 to 2010. More than three years altogether he has done research in Latvia in 1992-2010.  Also,  he has participated in 23  international scientific conferences with the presentations  in 1996-2010.

 

Professor Talonen is Coordinator in the International network of Baltic church-historians (INBCH). He has been member of Council of Faculty of Theology, Univeristy of Helsinki from 2006. In 2007-2010 he was Chairman of the Evaluation Committee for Pedagogical skills in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Helsinki.

 

In the bibliography of Prof. Talonen from 1971 to 2010 there are altogether more than 700 items. Besides monographs and scientific and articles, this list of publications includes popular articles in newspapers and journals, book reviews, informative texts, and various kinds of other writings.
