Professional Career
My professional identity integrates the roles of researcher, educator, and practitioner, all of which have been central to my career. I have spent the majority of my professional life at the University of Helsinki, serving as Professor of Swine Medicine, researcher, and clinical teacher. In addition, I have held positions as the official veterinarian (Director of Health Control) for the city of Mäntsälä and as Department Manager and veterinarian in Animal Health Control at the LSO Foods slaughterhouse.
My international experience includes development cooperation in Ethiopia, where I worked as a veterinary and training expert. I began my career as a practicing veterinarian, primarily engaged in large animal practice across various regions of Finland.

Research and Publications
My research has focused predominantly on swine health, including infectious and production-related diseases, antimicrobial use, behaviour, welfare, and reproduction. I have served as principal investigator on projects totaling approximately €1.7 million and have contributed as a researcher to additional projects exceeding €3 million.
My academic qualifications include the following Diplomate, European College of Porcine Health Management, Docent (Adjunct Professor) in Swine Medicine, PhD, National Specialist in Food Animal Health and Disease, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).
My publication record comprises more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific articles, numerous congress abstracts, and a wide range of educational and professional publications.

Pedagogical Experience
I am a dedicated and enthusiastic educator and have completed 25 ECTS credits of university level pedagogical training. My teaching responsibilities have included serving as the primary instructor for swine medicine and production animal medicine within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. I have also been a member of the Faculty Teaching Skills Committee.
I have extensive experience teaching veterinary students through lectures, demonstrations, practical training, clinical instruction, and herd-level fieldwork. My teaching topics encompass pig diseases and herd health, surgery, management, environmental factors, and nutrition. I have also been actively involved in continuing education for veterinarians, farmers, and other professionals both nationally and internationally.
In recognition of my pedagogical contributions, I was appointed a member of the Teachers’ Academy at the University of Helsinki. Additional honours include the Encouragement Award from the Veterinary Student Association (EKY) for my inspiring work with students (Kannuspalkinto), the Educator of the Year Award (Vuoden Pedagogi), and the Faculty’s Special Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Supervision has been a significant component of my academic work. I have supervised 10 doctoral researchers, 42 veterinary students completing their licentiate theses (Master’s level), and 5 students from other disciplines. Furthermore, I have supervised seven veterinarians specializing in production animal medicine at the national level.
My position as Inspector of the Varsinais Suomi Student Nation provided valuable engagement with the broader student community.

Administrative and Professional Service
Throughout my career, I have been privileged to serve in a wide range of administrative and professional roles. 
Within the European College of Porcine Health Management, I have held several key positions, including Treasurer and Board Member, Chair and Member of the Examination Committee, Member of the Extenuating Circumstances Committee and guest editor of the journal Porcine Health Management.
My leadership experience includes serving as Department Head within the Faculty, Head of the Production Animal Hospital, Chair of the University Animal Hospital Board, Chair of the Finnish Veterinary Foundation (SELS), and Chair of the Veterinary Specialization Committee. Additional service includes membership in the Faculty Council, participation in the Swine Veterinary and Expert Group of Animal Health ETT, and membership on the Editorial Board of the Finnish Veterinary Journal.
