Forskningsintressen

Matilda Hellman, DSocSci, is a sociologist, whose work on lifestyle- and health-related phenomena has been awarded and recognized internationally.
Hellman's research has furthered knowledge on the ways in which governance practice and institutions embed and produce views on questions such as drug use, alcohol policy, gambling, brain-based addiction and how it effects individuals, groups and societies. A central conceptual framework has been the welfare state in its many historical shapes and models. Selection of engagements:

Research lead in various international research projects since 2005, the latest of which is an ongoing ERA-NET-consortium regarding brain based addiction’s implications for policy and governance.

Media visibility: In June 2017 a study on the Nordic welfare state ethos i Finnish governmantal platforms since the 1950s was the most shared and reported news story from the university. In December 2017 Hellman was interviewed by the BBC World Service regarding Finland’s new alcohol act: Listen to interview at the PRI.org.

I supervise seven doctoral students and lead several research projects.

I teach in the the Doctoral programme in social sciences, Social Science Masters Program, The Contemporary Societies Program and in the Masters Program on Research and Leadership in the Social and Health Field
