Merits in teaching and pedagogical competence
Pedagogical education
At the University of Helsinki educational sciences secondary subject: excellent knowledge19.08.1993
Experience in the actual lecturing and teaching practice
Working as a Researching Lecturer in Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences 1998–
The activities on the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences involves:
• Design and development of curriculum, and courses with the teacher team of the study line, designing teacher facilitation and team teaching, philosophical background during early career was CDIO Initiative combined with Problem based learning and project based learning from where I developed the education towards facilitation role of teacher and team teaching. (See publications).
• Developing of the pedagogical practices since I am responsible for the design and implementation of social media into enhancing collaborative practices in the media engineering study line and developing new approaching of collaborative teaching of different disciplines within one course module as well as designing new ways to integrate user centred design methods into these collaborative courses. (See publications).
• Supervising the bachelor theses belongs to the main work of lecturers (I supervise 10 bachelor thesis within one academic year), in addition, I supervise Master level when these appropriate to my subject area (2 in total).
• I have been teaching and lecturing mainly in English in the international degree, but I also teach in the Finnish study line of media engineers. The subjects cover the following: project courses; usability-, user interface and experience design courses; communication course, media design courses; visual design courses, team and project work courses; design, implementation and management of media channels and tools courses; and innovative design practices course.
• At Metropolia the evaluation is organised through the Intranet using a feedback form that students’ fill after each course. In addition, I hold a face–to–face feedback session at the end of the course with the students, where we discuss the good and annoying aspects of the course. In recent years the collaborative teaching and lecturing has provided new challenges of feedback because the whole teacher teams has to get involved.
• I am also involved in EU-projects and in the design of integrated students smoothly to the projects. In addition in my responsibility is to apply for new international projects and execute research.
As part time lecturer (2005–) and Docent of semiotics (2013–) in Helsinki University. The following activities are included:
• Design and development of curriculum, and courses with the lecturer team of the semiotic studies (2006–2008).
• I have taught semiotic course in English and Finnish. The following subjects have been in my responsibility: 2005–2007 communication and semiotics; 2007– methodology of semiotics, 2008 cultural artefacts and semiotics; 2010 Semiotics and media. And semiotic methodologies from 2005-
• As an examiner of the 22 semiotic courses of Helsinki University 2016-2017
• I have consulted from request Master level thesis from, for example, Tartu University
• I hold a face–to–face feedback session in the end of the course with the students, where we discuss the good and the annoying aspects of the course and what and how the course could be developed. From these sessions I write a summary that was discussed with the other lecturers on the semiotic studies.

- Supervising two Master’s Thesis Department of E-Learning (2012-2014)
- Responsible of an online course on Contemporary Issues in e-Learning 2OCIL216 (2012- 2014)
As a postdoctoral researcher, position in design for ICT mediated learning environments in the Aalto University and as a part of the Learning Environments research group (LeGroup) at the at the Media Lab, Department of Media 2012-2015
- Providing one course per year on methodology
- Supervising master and PhD students. Currently supervising Jana Pejoska’s PhD as secondary supervisor in AALTO university, School of Art, Design and Architecture
- Integrating master (varied amounts) and PhD (varied amounts) students into the research group’s international and national research projects
Capability to produce learning material
Most of the study materials are in the Intranet of Helsinki University and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.
Some courses I have organised in Wiki, from these the old have been removed by the Wiki maintenance.
Project work courses can be found in the Knowledge Practices Environment. The environment was in the Knowledge-Practices Laboratory project (KP-Lab, IST project for EU’s Sixth Framework Program (2006-2011): http://www.knowledgepractices.info/ and http://www.kp-lab.org/). The actual workspaces are located at: http://2d.mobile.evtek.fi/shared-space/. However, the platform is not maintained anymore, thus courses have been moved and most have been changed due to the organisational and pedagogical changes in Metropolia University of Applied Sciences during the past 4 years.
