Information om forskning och undervisning

The concept of nitrogen cycle is much more complicated than it was believed relatively recently. Not only bacteria, but also fungi and archaea have a role to play in these processes. More information is needed, and I am seeking better understanding with a help of modern technology of isotope analysis. In the Soil Ecology Research Group we are combining these results with the molecular studies of different microbes in the same context of agricultural soils.

 

Either it is not well understood, how the global climate change affects nitrogen and carbon cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. Dissolved organic carbon fluxes are presently considered important for ecosystem carbon balance. Increasing DOC concentrations have been observed in large areas in Europe and North-America stream waters and forest lakes. There are many possible reasons for this phenomenon, and the environmental change can have an impact on these factors. I am studying the DOC fluxes in peat soil in manipulated environmental conditions at Lammi Biological Station. Some of the given information will be used in a catchment scale study.
