Information om forskning och undervisning

Research

My research interests include English as a lingua franca, language policing and regulation, and spoken and written academic discourse. My current research is on language regulation, or the ways people monitor, intervene in and manage their own and each other’s language use, with focus on the regulation of research writing by scholars in different disciplines. I conduct this research in the Language Regulation in Academia (LaRA) project (see http://www.helsinki.fi/project/lara, director Dr. Anna Solin, funded by the Kone Foundation). In addition, I am actively involved in collaboration projects with colleagues from Stockholm University.

I completed my doctoral dissertation on the topic of language regulation in English as a lingua franca (ELF) in 2013, and in 2016, I published a book based on the dissertation with De Gruyter Mouton (see below).

I am currently a member of the ELT Journal’s Editorial Panel, and in addition to the LaRA and English as a Lingua Franca in Academic Settings (ELFA) (see http://www.helsinki.fi/elfa) research teams, I am a member of a number of research networks, for instance, the English as a lingua franca research network (ELF-ReN) of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) and the Network for Discourse Studies of the Finnish Association of Applied Linguistics (AFinLA).

 

Teaching

I work as a University Lecturer in English studies for the BA Programme for Languages and the MA Programme for English Studies at the University of Helsinki. As an academic advisor, I also provide study guidance to our students.
