Research summary: A key issue in biology is to uncover the mechanisms employed by conserved signaling pathways to generate morphological diversity. The Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs), members of the TGF-beta superfamily, are a family of highly conserved secreted growth factors involved in metazoan developmental processes as diverse as cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and cell-fate determination. Our studies intend to unveil the mechanisms of how spatial distribution of BMP ligands is regulated for pattern formation and how its modifications contribute to morphological variations in Drosophila and other species.
