I am a PhD candidate in the Integrative Life Sciences Programme, in affiliation with HiLIFE, the Helsinki Institute of Life Science and the Institute of Biotechnology in Helsinki.
My research interest include:
Development
Evolution
Complexity
Morphological development and evolution
Biological variation
Computational modeling
Gene networks
Biomechanics
Developmental stability
Robustness
Genotype phenotype map
On a general level, my work falls under the umbrella of EvoDevo (Evolution and Development). More specifically, I study the phenotypic variation that different developmental mechanisms can produce. From a development perspective, I study what in development is necessary to produce complex and stable morphologies. From an evolutionary perspective, I study the variational properties of developmental mechanisms able to produce complex morphologies. Together, this research allows me to study how complexity could have arisen during evolution and how it could evolve. Methodologically, I use computational models of development, which allow me to study a myriad of very diverse developmental mechanisms in a reasonable time.
