Information om forskning och undervisning

Suvi is an Academy of Finland Postdoctoral Researcher working at the Faculty of Law, University of Helsinki. She has been granted the Title of Docent (Adjunct Professor) in European Law by the University of Helsinki in February 2018.

Research interests

Suvi's research falls within the field of European Law. Her ongoing postdoctoral research project, nicknamed '(L)awful protectionism', (funded by the Academy of Finland 2016-19) focuses on goods and studies potential concrete legal means - such as country-of-origin (COO) indications, consumer information, standardisation - for promoting overall welfare in Europe in a global age, and, in a more theoretical sense, (re-)connecting non-cosmopolitan transnational (generative) solidarity to the relationship between the European market and the Market citizen (consumer).

Suvi's prior, and also ongoing, research interests include judicial adjudication in general, in particular the preliminary reference procedure, and especially the legal reasoning of the Court of Justice. Her approach here is, methodologically, a combination of legal doctrinal studies, socio-legal studies and legal empirical (qualitative and quantitative) research - paired with relevant legal theory. She is intrigued by how the Court's actions are, as those of any court, facilitated but also constrained by law, moreover, how interpretation (both legal interpretation and scholarly (re-)interpretation of judgments) should always allow due consideration for (legal) context. Most results are collected in her monograph European Court of Justice Legal Reasoning in Context (Groningen: Europa Law Publishing, 2013).

Suvi Sankari is a member of the research project European Bonds: The Moral Economy of Debt, one founder-member of the newly established Nordic Network of legal empirical scholars ('No-Les-Law', funded by NOS-HS), and collaborates with InterTran Research Group for Sustainable Law and Business and the FiDiPro project on the External Dimension of European Private Law (EDEPL).

Suvi was previously a Postdoctoral researcher of the Many Constitutions of Europe research project and worked (2011-13) in the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence 'The Foundations of European Law and Polity' 2008-2013.

Teaching

Having taught at the University of Helsinki since 2004, Suvi has gained broad experience of planning courses and teaching them either alone or together with colleagues. Suvi personally enjoys collaborative teaching, but prefers it especially because the presence of two (or more) teachers in class engages the students more fully and produces better learning outcomes (according to student feedback). Suvi has mainly taught EU law, mainly Master's students, and, as of late, mainly in English. For example, she has co-taught two Master’s thesis projects (2014-15 joint project of European Law and Legal Sociology; 2016-17 European Law). Generally, the substantive topics of courses as well as teaching methods have varied. For example, small-group methodology seminars (4ECTS) taught alone; on-line book exams in the exam aquarium (6ECTS); lecture-based introductory course to EU law taught alone as well as co-taught (8ECTS); practical skills courses of how EU law works in Finland with civil servants as visiting lecturers  (4ECTS); to co-taught discussion and writing seminar on 'Law and politics of transnational courts'; to intensive problem-based small-group course on 'Applied EU law' (8-10ECTS) co-taught in US Law School style, together with a research collaborator and colleague. Smaller teaching units include 90-minute sessions on: 'Methods of EU law' (to all Master's students); 'Internal Market Law Workshop' (to most Bachelor's students); 'Public EU Law Workshop' (to most Bachelor's students): and 'Introduction to EU Law' (IBL-students). The newest addition to taught courses is 'International Commercial Transactions 3: EU Transport Law and Policy'. Methods of learning assessment have varied from grading class participation to learning diaries to classic essay exams and from multiple choice to research essays, and combinations of these.
