A Cognitive Grammar of Finnish in comparison with other Finno-Ugric Languages

The research project is part of an international research network Cognitive Linguistic Perspectives on Finno-Ugric Languages. The aim of the network is to apply a functional-cognitive framework in an extensive comparison of the Finno-Ugric languages and their central grammatical constructions. The project is coordinated by professor Tiina Onikki-Rantajääskö. PhD Minna Jaakola works as a researcher in the project (from the beginning of 2013); MA Jutta Salminen works as a research assistant and a PhD student; MA Eero Voutilainen works as a part-time researcher. In addition, PhD Rigina Ajanki and PhD Mari Siiroinen belong to the research network.

Other members of the international research network are the Hungarian project Functional cognitive linguistics research led by professor Gábor Nagy (ELTE, Budapest); the Finnish-Estonian comparative project led by professor Tuomas Huumo (Universities of Turku and Tartu; researchers Kersten Lehismets and Csenge Fekete); and the Estonian project Language and meaning: semantics and grammar in a cognitive perspective led by professor Renate Pajusalu (University of Tartu). Our collaborative partners include Laura Janda’s project at the University of Tromsø (Norway). The research network has chosen 10 central grammatical topics, which will be studied by cooperative groups/partners consisting of researchers studying different languages. The comparison will be done mainly between Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian, but the investigation will also include other Finno-Ugric languages such as Erzya. The research topics are: 1) word order, 2) aspect, 3) deixis and the marking of person, 4) epistemicity and evidentiality, 5) postpositions and case system, 6) word derivation, 7) tempus change in discourse, 8) emotion expressions, 9) metaphor, and 10) metonymy.

The project develops previous research that has been done by its researchers (e.g. Construing the reader in the framework of media concept): partly overlapping research topics will be developed further and the collected data will be utilized as a part of the data used in the project. The analysis will concentrate on the contextual functions of the grammatical constructions investigated in the research.

Collaboration of the international network started in a workshop at the University of Helsinki and the Saari residence 20th-22nd September 2012 organized by the project. In the future, workshops will be organized in all of the countries involved in the project.

The project has received funding from the Kone Foundation Language Programme. The length of the project: 2012-2016.
