CAPTURE addresses one of the grand research challenges of the 21st century: the role of the carbon cycle in regulating Earth’s climate. In particular, carbon dynamics of high-latitude regions are a highly uncertain component of global carbon budgets. The interactions among climate, carbon and Arctic ecosystems are complex, and there are substantial risks of unexpected feedbacks and rapid transformations. The overriding objective of the present project is to make breakthrough in understanding the fate and transfer of carbon across the Euro-Asian Arctic landscape gradients and the consequences for atmospheric greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4) concentrations and climate. One of the main originalities of the proposed research is assessing the carbon cycling processes in the Arctic across spatial (from experimental plots to small catchments to regions and finally to a wider segment of the Euro-Asian Arctic) and temporal (the past two millennia, present, future) scales, in order to advance our understanding of carbon dynamics, climate variability and the risks of unwelcome carbon cycle feedbacks. It is the first time in the history of Finnish science that skills spanning different aspects of Arctic carbon cycling are put together in a joint effort, including landscape elements, time scales and novel methodological approaches we have taken in carrying out in situ measurements, palaeo-reconstructions, GHG flux measurements, biogeochemical modelling, remote sensing-based up-scaling and earth system modelling. The research undertaken will advance mechanistic understanding of vertical and lateral carbon transfer in and between vegetation, mineral soils, peatlands, lakes and the atmosphere and provide new data on carbon stocks and carbon-climate interconnections. The project will provide scientific information that is required to construct well-founded policies, and to translate scientific results into operational models supporting the decision making process. Such expected growth in knowledge would not be possible, would the groups work independently without a formal consortium.
