Chinese Indonesians – Hybrid Identities and the Indonesian Nationalist Movement in the Early 20th Century Dutch East-Indies

The purpose of my research is to contribute to studies of the Indonesian national project by conducting an analysis and re-interpretation of the political position of the Chinese Indonesians in the Indonesian community from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1950s. In popular discourse and scholarly literature the Chinese Indonesians are often portrayed as foreign and marginalized outsiders.

This perspective seems overlook the fact that many Straits-born Chinese contributed to the political development of contemporary Indonesia in the colonial period by pursuing inclusive policies that aligned with the goals of the indigenous nationalist movement. I hope to re-assess existing materials and data to see if I can find new research trajectories that explore how Chinese Indonesians as active agents contributed to the independence movement and the nationalist narrative of multiethnic Indonesia.
