DigiTala will enhance equal opportunities of learning second languages, by developing and investigating a prototype tool for training
and assessing speaking. The first field of application is a speaking component in the Finnish upper secondary school-leaving
examination. A large digital speech data in Swedish and Finnish is already compiled and stored, and the corpus will be completed with
other languages. By utilizing automatic speech recognition, the speech samples are analysed to refine a digital tool that will lend a
unique opportunity to raise the efficiency and standardisation of human ratings to meet the challenges of a high-stakes assessment. The
finalised tool will allow learners from various linguistic backgrounds to enhance their oral proficiency at their own pace supported by
the immediate feedback from the tool. The speech and assessment database and tools provide also a unique research approach to the
modern construct of oral proficiency and multiple ways of assessing it.
