This project is an intervention study on the early numeracy learning of low-performing South African children. We argue that identifying children who show lower performance compared to their age peers at the beginning of their formal schooling and providing them with preventive interventions will mitigate their possible future learning difficulties and thus render their educational paths more favorable. The first aim of this study is to investigate what is the level of early numeracy skills in a sample of South African children in the first months of formal schooling. In this cross-sectional study there is 443 first-graders (206 girls and 237 boys) from Gauteng province schools. The mean age of the children was 81.61 months (6 years 10 months) (SD 5.40 months). Their early numeracy, executive functions and language skills are measured. The second aim of this study is investigates whether South African low-performing first grade children’s mathematics skills could be improved by using the ThinkMath (Mononen & Aunio, 2012) intervention programme. The participants are 305 first graders from 15 classrooms in the greater Johannesburg area. The time line of this study is 1.1.2016-31.12.2017
