The project Gender Issues, Science Education and Learning, GISEL (2002 - 2005) (http://www.malux.edu.helsinki.fi/malu/tutkimus/gisel/index.en.htm) was founded in 2002 as a co-operative effort of the Department of Teacher Education, University of Helsinki with three local authorities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. GISEL is under the umbrella of the ESR project MIRROR. The goal of GISEL is to improve teaching and learning in science and technology in Finnish comprehensive schools ( grades 5-12) with the aim of motivating girls in particular to study science and technology (including information and communication technology, ICT) at school and specifically to steer them to continue their education within science and technology-oriented studies. The ESR- funded three year project GISEL was organised under the umbrella of MIRROR and its total budget was 452, 501 €.
