INCLUD-ED, Strategies for Inclusion and Social Cohesion in Europe from Education


    Beskrivning (abstrakt)

    INCLUDE-ED is a European Union project to promote social integration, which is carried out in 2006-2011. The name of the project is called "Strategies for Inclusion and Social Cohesion in Europe from Education."

    Included are 14 partners from Spain, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Lithuania, Malta, Latvia, Romania, Slovenia, United Kingdom and Finland. In Finland, Helsinki University´s Department of Teacher Education.

    The main objective is to analyze the social factors which promote the integration of education and educational systems, and examines the marginalization of the leading systems. Finland will focus on early childhood and primary education. Research is done in kindergartens, primary schools and in classrooms where special students are integrated.

    Include-Ed consists of six different sub-projects. University of Helsinki is involved in four. The research group in Helsinki consists of project leader, prof. Mikko Ojala, Senior Lecturer Jyrki Reunamo, project planner Reko Niemelä and project worker Anna-Leena Lastikka.

    Project 1: European Educational Systems: Connecting Theories, Reforms and Outcomes.
    The objective is to analyze school and educational systems , which may cause children's educational and social exclusion. The aim is also to find the factors that prevent social exclusion. The project seeks to answer the research question: What are the factors of school and education system which increase or reduce the school success?

    Project 2: European Effective Educational Practices: How is Education Contributing to Overcome or Reproduce or Social Exclusion?
    The aim is to analyze the various elements of educational practices that reduce or enhance children's learning and success. Research area selection was guided by following criteria: the region of low socio-economic backgrounds and minority groups, educational or teaching activities based on the models which have been found to help children's learning.

    Project 3: Social and Educational Exclusion and Inclusion. Social Structure in a European Knowledge-based Society
    The project aims to explore how the pedagogical and educational exclusion affects society in different activities (eg, unemployment, housing conditions, health, social participation) and what types of educational practices and actions there are to prevent social exclusion

    Project 6: Local Projects for Social Cohesion
    The aim is to explore the communities where they implement social and educational intervention to promote the integration of practice, and answer the question: What factors contribute to the reduction of inequality and exclusion and promote social integration and inclusion?
    Finland is to examine pre-school and it´s surroundings of once a year for a period of four years. Research has begun in March 2007. Research area selection was guided by the following criteria: the region of low socio-economic background and minority groups literacy, school performance, the active intervention program or project which will be taken place throughout the inclusion (kindergarten, school, parents of the children, the region's various communities, etc .) as well as social and educational approach to achieve integration.
