Projektinformation

Beskrivning

The aim of the initiative is to re-examine important groups of Roman texts from Central and Southern Italy, written in Latin or Greek, in their geographical and archaeological settings. The research will thus contribute to a broader interpretation of the Roman culture of writing. It is essentially a cross-disciplinary initiative between classical philology and archaeology, but other fields will also be touched upon: literacy, bilingualism, social history and gender studies. The project consists of four subsections. Two subsections examine the distribution of burial inscriptions and stamps on lead water pipes in the surroundings of the city of Rome. In the third section, the focus is on the transformation of linguistic landscape around the Bay of Naples in the early imperial period. The last section looks at the graffiti in the public and private spaces in the context of one very interesting city, Pompeii.
