Nordic Network for New Social Pragmatism

Beskrivning (abstrakt)

Pragmatist theorizing, focusing on social action, habits, and how people solve problems in practice, has emerged as a prominent analytical approach in sociology. It could help provide answers to some of the most pressing questions for Nordic societies in the era of uncertainty we now live in, including societal solutions to environmental problems, political and moral polarization, and the overall
changing political cultures of Nordic societies. Pragmatist theories have indeed been fruitfully employed by several social scientists in the Nordic countries. Nevertheless, there is thus far scarce collaboration between these social pragmatists in the Nordics, and these theories have rarely been utilized for comparative work in the Nordic countries, even though they would be more than suitable for it. Also, the most popular contemporary French approaches to pragmatic sociology could be better integrated with other compatible and useful social theories. This is why we propose a series of three workshops for the founding of the Nordic Network for New Social Pragmatism (NNNSP): first, in November 2021 in Helsinki, to explore common ground and potential for breaking new ground among scholars working on various empirical issues using compatible theoretical tools; second, in March 2022 in Trondheim, to chart the
potential of pragmatist social theory in answering topical policy-relevant Nordic empirical problems, together with stake-holders; and third, in November 2022 in Copenhagen, to sketch out a future path for Nordic social pragmatist collaboration with shared research projects. These workshops will be organised in collaboration between Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish scholars. In the workshops, by way of inclusive roundtable discussions, we will develop preliminary first-draft research ideas into working collaborations between early-career and more senior scholars from four different Nordic countries, and ultimately to produce research articles and funding applications with the aim to answer topical Nordic societal questions using pragmatist theory. The workshop series will give birth to a sustained Nordic network of social pragmatist scholars which will connect to European and international networks.
