Suupohja railway – strengthening development corridor

The aim of the project is to increase cargo transport on Seinäjoki-Kaskinen (Suupohja) railway, determine the preconditions for passenger transport and assess the regional economic impacts of the railway. Developing rail transport saves energy and improves state of environment. The project is implemented in cooperation with Etelä-Pohjanmaan rautatieyhdistys and University of Helsinki Ruralia-institute with the financial support of the EAFRD.

The project has three measures:
1) activate the augmentation of cargo transport
2) examine with the trackside municipalities the preconditions for passenger transport especially between Seinäjoki and Kurikka
3) assess the regional economic impacts of the Suupohja railway in three different future scenarios
