Sammanfattning

The main goal of this article is to show, how different ethnodemographic and historical background forces motivated different language and nationalities policies in each Baltic country; and how these have resulted in quite different patterns of the use of titular and Russian languages in these republics, as well as quite different patterns of societal integration. The Baltic cases are discussed in the general social psychological framework of status reversal, outlining the factors that constraint political choices in this domain.
