Sammanfattning
The biodiversity decline (see Biodiversity) relates to other urgent sustainable development topics(see Sustainable Development) like climate change (see Climate Change) and is one of the more alarming threats to the world of today (CBD 2000, 2020b; Erdelen 2014). Humans are completely dependent on other biological components for their survival, but humans are a threat to the planet’s biodiversity. Yet, as a species with moral consciousness, humans are capable of learning and understanding how their activities affect the rest of nature, and how future biodiversity losses can be avoided. Therefore, biodiversity education (BE) is most important and is in need of development.
BE focuses on raising awareness on the necessity of sustaining a biodiverse planet (CEE 2013). This awareness includes understanding what biodiversity means, why it is important, how to safeguard it, and how to manage it. The aim is to encourage joint engagement and inclusion (see Inclusion) of various persons and groups in the work on biodiversity protection and preservation. Protection is a more instrumental approach to safeguard nature for human interests and preserve searches for a kinship with nature (Franco 2013). This means that the approach varies (see also Weak Sustainability and Strong Sustainability).
Since biodiversity is more than a biological concept, BE likewise relates to many other human domains, such as politics, the economy, social and cultural issues, legacy, and ethics (see Ethics and Ethics and Ethical Theories). BE is a lifelong
process including people from the entire world and in the most various learning situations.
