This paper is based on an early childhood education development project in the Helsinki Metropolitan area. Development in day care centres was implemented by reflective practices within everyday activities. As an example of reflective practice, we describe and examine the development process for facilitating children´s participation. The data were collected from 21 pilot research day care centres with a survey implemented twice in both 2010 and 2011. As a result, a definition for small children’s participation was substantiated and four tasks describing the professional´s role as enhancer of children´s participation were listed.
