This paper explores the aspect of ownership in collaborative knowledge building. The three case examples from Higher Education examine ownership as access, as adaptation and as control. In all three ownership is seen as a valid concern especially in technologically complex settings. Therefore the very concept of technology should include the resources required for the use of the technical means in question. This way we could better grasp what makes a particular educational technology – whether it is a software package or a theory of learning- useful in a certain context and subsequently design and carry out more refined collaborative knowledge building and other learning activities.
