These videos help you to learn basics and backgrounds in good map visualization. Videos will introduce you to general "rules" and guidelines for map visualization. With the use of maps, it is possible to highlight geographical data and GIS data and make them more accessible for transmitting information or analyzing data. Topics of the videos cover: 1) Basics of cartography and map visualization (13:03); 2) Map elements (16:32); 3) Map projection (6:34); 4) Data classification (7:09); 5) Colours (5:37); 6) Example map: Choropleth map (2:15); 7) Example map: Dot map (2:51); 8) Example map: Cartogram (3:05); 9) Example map: Flow map (3:57). This material can be used as self-study material or as a part of course material. These videos are created by the student group in the geography and GIS project course in the University of Helsinki together with the the Teachers' Academy (University of helsinki) and the research project CRITICAL, which was funded by the Strategic research Council (SRC) established within the Academy of Finland. The language in the videos is English.
