Sammanfattning

The ethos of the Finnish basic education is to offer equal educational opportunities all pupils. Yet, many factors like family background or need for special support, have their effect on educational outcomes. Our focus is on the transition from the basic to upper secondary education. With the follow-up data (n = 357) we analyse how often and why pupils consider changing or dropping out of their studies. Our special focus is on young people with immigrant origins. We conclude that every fifth young people had considered chancing their study place or dropping out. These considerations followed typically two lines: changes in the career expectations, or in the workload of studying. Although young people with immigrant origins shared similar experiences with the Finnish-origin young, their transitions were also multiphase and opportunities fewer. Not all the young people changed or dropped out of education, but expressed adjustment, grit and attachment to their studies.
